Web app (PWA) — free

Your else-wer server already serves the web app; there’s nothing extra to install. Open your server’s address in a browser and use Add to Home Screen to get an app icon. It streams, resumes where you left off, and can download books for offline listening.

iPhone/iPad: pausing from the lock screen

If you pause from the lock screen, you can’t resume from the lock screen; iOS takes the audio away from web apps once they’re paused in the background. Unlock the phone and reopen else-wer to carry on. Playing straight through with the screen locked works fine. Offline downloads on iOS also need HTTPS; see iOS offline limitations.

Android app — small one-time fee

A native player with lock-screen and notification controls, background playback and offline downloads. It connects to the same server, so your progress syncs with the web app.

iPhone app — in the works

A native iPhone app is under construction and will be released based on demand. Like the Android app, it will be a one-time purchase of about $5.
